Sharing the Story: Thoughts on Fields of Faith (and other things)
On Sunday, October 4, Bishop Amy Current’s message was about the power of storytelling—how the stories we tell about God, faith, and our own lives help shape our understanding of God and ourselves. We even sang “I Love to Tell the Story” as the song of the day. It is powerful when we share the story of God’s love with each other!
Many of our students are excited about “Fields of Faith” at Tiger Stadium this Wednesday, October 7. With the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and area churches like Lutheran Church of Hope involved, it promises to be a big night of music, prayer, and worship! It’s awesome to see our youth eager to explore their faith alongside their peers. Events like this can be wonderful, high-energy milestones in a young person’s faith journey.
If you or the young folks in your life are planning to attend, we hope it’s a great time! And consider starting the evening at Grace with our Wednesday meal at 5:15 pm—a chance to connect with the Grace community before the big event. We’ll still worship at 6:35 pm as usual, and the youth room will be open from 7:30–9:00 pm for anyone who wants a place to hang out, connect, or just be.
Fields of Faith is also an opportunity to hear the stories and experiences of the speakers who share their faith that evening. Large events like this bring together Christians from many different traditions. It's helpful to remember that some of these hold beliefs and interpretations that are different from our understanding of God's unconditional and inclusive love for all.
If you or your young folks attend, instead of asking “Did you have fun?” try these conversation starters:
What story did you hear?
Was there a speaker who really connected with you? Why?
What stuck with you or surprised you?
What was different from what we talk about at Grace?
Where did you hear or see God’s love?
These are great questions whenever someone shares their story with us. At Grace, we tell the story of God’s inclusive, abundant love for all; grace and faith are gifts from God through the Holy Spirit; and there is room for every one of us, no matter what. As we grow in faith, we listen and wonder, ask questions and learn from each other. Because we love to tell the story!
With love in Christ Jesus,
Pastor Tania
