Lutheran Day on the Hill

Register before Feb. 1 to receive a free t-shirt!

Pastor Tania and other members of Grace will be joining Lutheran Services of Iowa and the three Iowa synods of the ELCA for Lutheran Day on the Hill in Des Moines on February 19! This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about LSI, advocacy, and to speak with your state legislators about issues that matter to you.

Lutheran Day on the Hill is LSI’s biggest advocacy event of the year. Over 150 participants will gather at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church to learn about the critical issues that Iowa children, adults, and families are facing. After learning about advocacy and LSI’s mission in action, the group heads to the Iowa State Capitol to talk directly with legislators. This year's keynote speaker is Rev. Amy Reumann Senior Director for ELCA Witness and Society.

For more information and the link to register, visit LSI’s website. If you have any questions about what to expect or would like to carpool, please contact Pastor Tania at pastortania515@gmail.com.

Poverty Simulation

Poverty Simulation

Grace Lutheran's Social Action Committee to Host Poverty Simulation

This simulation helps break down stereotypes by allowing participants to step into the real life situations of others.

Poverty is often portrayed as a stand alone issue - but this simulation allows individuals to walk a month in the shoes of someone who is facing poverty and realize how complex and interconnected issues of poverty really are.

  • A single parent with limited resources and no transportation must find a way to get to work and get their child to daycare.

  • An elderly person must find a way to pay for both utilities and medication.

  • A young adult must care for siblings while their parent is incarcerated.

  • An elderly couple must raise their grandchildren and deal with their own health and employment issues

After the experience, individuals then have the opportunity to discuss what they’ve learned with their peers. The Community Action Poverty Simulation is a tool that helps participants rethink the challenges that millions of low income individuals must face each and every day. More importantly, this tool helps people identify areas of change that can directly impact the effects of poverty on individuals, families and communities.

You are invited to participate in a Poverty Simulation on Sunday, November 12, 2023, from 1-3:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 23932 Meadow Road, Adel, Iowa. There is no cost to participate, but we do ask that you RSVP here.

Please contact Jamie Loggins-Evans, jamieevans@projectiowa.org if you have any questions.

We hope that you can join us! This simulation is open to the community, so please invite your friends, families, and colleagues.

Project Iowa coordinates and runs the Missouri Community Action Poverty Simulation with their partner Center for Social Ministry

Reformation Sunday

On October 29, all are invited to wear red as the color of the day!

Readings:Jeremiah 31:31-34; Psalm 46; Romans 3:19-28; John 8:31-36
Spark Story Bible: “,” p. 306

Rooted in the past and growing into the future, the church must always be reformed in order to live out the love of Christ in an ever-changing world. We celebrate the good news of God’s grace, that Jesus Christ sets us free every day to do this life-transforming work. Trusting in the freedom given to us in baptism, we pray for the church, that Christians will unite more fully in worship and mission.
